First DP1 samples

I haven't yet figured out how to use Sigma Photo Pro properly so for now I'm just exporting the uncorrected raw files to Cs4 and then apply an action I've created, that sort of mimics the look of Velvia 50... in fact the little DP1 behaves a lot like a rangefinder camera loaded with slide film.
Apart from the obvious resolution difference and the beautiful colors straight out of the camera you can achieve with film, the Sigma seems to deliver exceptionally similar results (without corrections) to what you can get with Fuji Astia100.
As with slide film, you have to be careful when dealing with high contrast scenes, otherwise highlights will be blown out. Another essential similarity is that you have to use correction filters, otherwise your images will look awfully "cold" during a bright sunny day (there's no way of properly configuring white balance as with my Canons and Nikons).

By the end of next week I should come up with a small review and If I get the chance to get out on the field I'll post some samples from the Nikkor AF-S DX 35/1.8G
.

New "toys"

Tonight I've finished designing my second book (hurray!) so I was looking forward to do some landscape work for my upcoming book/portfolio (I'll explain all the details in the next posts) but... it's almost raining outside and by the looks of things it won't improve for at least a week. Too bad. It would have been a great opportunity (since I took a week off) to try out a Nikkor AF-S DX 35/1.8G I've ordered last week (along with a Nikkor AF-S DX VR 18-55/3.5-5.6 G - great for everyday use with my D70).
The same day I've ordered the lens (oh yes, I almost forgot... I've paid 300euros for both including shipping via UPS...) I convinced myself that for some reason I needed a compact camera (not a backup, the D70 is light enough)... so I bought a Sigma DP1. Yes... I know, it's probably the most frustrating (and slowest) camera on earth to use, but on the other hand the images it can deliver are just astonishing... and for 240euros it seemed like a bargain... but I must confess, I'm a bit worried... sharpness and technical quality are pointless if you miss a shot or worst, if you start fiddling with the menus (and raw files...) rather than taking pictures. We'll see.
That's it for now, in the next days I hope to get the opportunity to take some shots with the 35/1.8g and come up with a small non scientific review (forget about charts and stuff, I have no time nor see the point of doing that kind of pornography...).

Enjoy and stay tuned ;)

Let's start with a picture I've taken last Sunday after a boring Saturday night. I had 2 choices: staying home and redesigning a book I'm working on and waiting for the early lights of the morning to get the shot, or going out with an old friend... guess what... I had enough of the damn book (it's one of those haunted assignments).
Skipping the boring part... I got back at around 5:50AM, just in time to go home and pick my D300 and tripod.
What you see in the picture is the beautiful little venetian town of Pirano (Piran in slovenian), Slovenia (check Wikipedia). That's it for now... :)
